The analysis of CHN and S is a standard technique for caloric determination and environmental compatibility of fossil fuels such as coal, coke and peat as well as for regenerating raw materials such as biomass or combustible garbage. Elemental analyzers of ELEMENTAR are characterised by a large sample size and large concentration range. Therefore, they are especially suited for the safe analysis of inhomogenous substances such as solid fuels.

The vario EL analyzer can analyze as much as 30 mg absolute carbon, which is the largest of any CHNS simultaneous analyzer. The macro analyzer vario MACRO CHN is comparable to the vario EL regarding sample handling but allows the simultaneous CHN analysis of more than 100 mg coal. The vario MAX CHN is the first analyzer for fuels with open, re-usable sample crucibles and can accomondate sample weights of up to 200 mg coal.
